DeepLearn 2024: Universidade da Maia Hosts International Summer School in Artificial Intelligence

The Universidade da Maia hosted the DeepLearn 2024 Summer School, an advanced training programme in Artificial Intelligence, held from 15 to 19 July 2024. The event was co-organised with the LIACC – Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science Laboratory, reinforcing Portugal’s growing role in cutting-edge AI research and education.

A Truly Global AI Gathering

With over 370 participants from 39 nationalities, DeepLearn 2024 highlighted the global nature of AI research and development. Portugal led participation with 57 attendees, followed by Italy (52), Denmark (41), France (35), and the Netherlands (19). Notably, Japan was the most distant country represented, underscoring the international appeal of the programme.

The event brought together 18 leading AI specialists, who shared their expertise through a series of in-depth sessions and hands-on workshops.

Advanced Topics and Expert-Led Training

Each expert delivered a dedicated workshop consisting of three sessions of 90 minutes each. The programme covered a wide range of advanced topics, including:

  • Large Language Models (LLMs)
  • Text mining and machine reading
  • Deep learning for language and speech
  • Edge machine learning
  • Automated Machine Learning (AutoML)
  • Graph machine learning
  • Sustainability and AI
  • Explainable AI (xAI)
  • 3D computer vision
  • AI applications in healthcare and medicine

These sessions provided participants with both cutting-edge research insights and practical applications, making the programme highly valuable for students, researchers, and professionals alike.

Strengthening AI Education and Research

DeepLearn 2024 stood out as a landmark event in advanced AI education, offering a unique platform for knowledge exchange between international experts and emerging talent.
